If You're Going to Build an ADU, Why Not Build it to the Highest Standard?

You're not just adding square footage. You're creating space for family, rental income, or a better way to use your land. The question is simply: what standard do you want it built to?

Why Build an ADU — And Why Build It Right

One ADU. Four Reasons to Build It Right.

For Rental Income

Create a unit that attracts better tenants — because it's quieter, healthier, and dramatically cheaper to operate. No cold complaints in January. No tenant turnover every spring.
ADUs generate $1,500–$2,000+/month in Ontario rental income.

For Family

Bring aging parents or adult children closer with a space that feels dignified, private, and comfortable year-round. Not a converted garage. A real home — on your property.
With a Quantum ADU, your family doesn't just live closer. They live better.

For Resilience

Build a structure made for Ontario weather — and built to last. Less worry during outages. More stability during storms. Better long-term value in a market that rewards real performance.
"11 days without power. We lost three degrees." — Quantum homeowner

For the Land

Your panels are built in a factory and installed in days — so the property you love stays more like you found it. Minimal excavation. 1–2% waste versus the 10–15% standard.
Fast, clean, responsible construction. Anybody who cares about their land should know the difference.

  What is an ADU?

An Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) — also called a garden suite, laneway home, coach house, or secondary unit — is a fully self-contained home on the same lot as your primary residence. Under Ontario's Bill 23, most properties now permit up to three units as-of-right, with no zoning amendment required. ADUs can be detached (backyard), attached, or internal. They're used for rental income, aging parents, adult children, cottage guests, or simply a smarter way to use land you already own.

You already know you want the space.

But how much compromise are you willing to live with?

Most ADUs are built to minimum code — which sounds fine, until you're the one living in it. Or the one owning it and getting calls about the heating bill.

Code Minimum construction can mean:
❌ It still feels cold near the windows
❌ The air inside feels stuffy
❌ Your energy bills stay high - Forever
❌ Delays and things not going as planned

❌ Your property gets torn up for months

❌ May not be future proof with rising sustainability targets

The Build It Better Point of View

If you're going to build anyway, build it to the highest standard.

Quantum ADUs aren't a better version of minimum code — they are a fundamentally different structure, engineered from the ground up to perform better, protect your investment, and deliver value for decades.

So What's the Alternative?

Introducing the Quantum ADU.

Built Beyond Code. Not Just to It.

You've just seen what minimum code gets you. Here's what happens when you build with the worlds leading high-performance building standard, factory-certified components, and a thermal envelope designed to last 100 years.

What's the difference?...

ONTARIO BUILDING CODE MINIMUM ADU

Economy Car

Like a base model car built to meet minimum requirements. It gets you from point A to B, but everything is designed to pass inspection—not to optimize performance.
QAUNTUM ADU

Sports Car

Engineered to a higher standard from the ground up. Every component chosen for performance, not compliance. Smoother ride, tighter control—and consistent top performance year after year.
This isn’t like choosing between two similar cars.
It’s choosing between a standard build and a fully engineered one.

 THE COMPONENTS
Passive House  Certified Panels—the global benchmark for building performance.
Ontario Building Code sets a floor — a minimum standard builders must clear. PHI certification doesn't know what a floor is. It's a third-party performance standard that exceeds code by an order of magnitude, awarded to the components themselves — not the builder's marketing. Quantum builds with certified cold-climate panels.
 THE BUILDING ENVELOPE
Engineered components — not stick-framed on a job site in the rain.
Standard Ontario construction means walls framed on site, to minimum spec, by whoever's available that week. Quantum panels are engineered using building science principles and subject to stringent quality checks before they leave Minden. The result is a super-insulated, airtight envelope designed to last 100+ years — and to perform exactly the same on day one as it does on year thirty.
 THE ENERGY MODEL
So airtight, so well-insulated, your heating demand drops to almost nothing.
In a standard Ontario home, your heating system is fighting the building envelope all winter. In a Quantum ADU, the envelope does the work. A heat pump handles the rest. No propane. No oil. No dual billing. Just one electric bill — and when homeowners tell you what it costs to run the whole thing for a year, you'll wonder why you'd build any other way.
🏭

Factory-built means your panel costs are controlled.

When panels are engineered and manufactured in a controlled environment, material quantities are exact and waste drops to 1–2% versus the industry's 10–15%. What Quantum builds, Quantum prices accurately — because the manufacturing process that drives it is controlled end to end. That's better for your budget, and better for the land your ADU is built on.

From Quantum Homeowners

Four Real Homeowners. Zero Regrets.

“Good for us and good for the earth.”
We chose Quantum Passivhaus because integrity is important to us. We weren’t just building a house, we were building a way of life, and a connection with the earth.

We’ve lived in the house over 7 years now and still appreciate the comfort it offers —consistent temperatures from room to room, clean, fresh air, and no cold floors or drafts. During an ice storm, we went 11 days without power and barely lost any heat. The house just works, and our energy costs are much lower than what we were used to.

We feel very fortunate to have this beautiful home. It’s good for us, good for the earth, and good for our pocketbook. We highly recommend this company.

Gail and Mike Holness

"It feels like a cocoon for our family."
"The house is incredibly quiet, consistent from room to room, and the air feels clean. There’s very little dust, and the comfort is something you notice every day. "

Kathy and John Sprowl

"I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t build to this standard."
"From a cost perspective, it was basically the same as building a traditional house at the time, but the efficiency is far better. Everything here is electric, and we only have one bill."

Frequently Asked Questions

The Questions You Are Already Asking.

Essentials gives you the panelized building envelope — panels manufactured in Minden, delivered and installed by Quantum. You coordinate everything inside. DIY gives you the panels delivered to site — you handle installation and everything else. Complete Turnkey means Quantum acts as your General Contractor from foundation to final fixture. All three packages are built on the same PHI-certified panels and the same high-performance envelope.
The exact language matters. These ADUs are built with PHI-certified cold-climate panels — the only ones in Canada. The panels themselves carry the certification. We do not describe the buildings as Passive House certified unless that specific building certification has been achieved.
It depends on the package. For Complete Turnkey, the scope is presented as a fixed-price contract. For Essentials and DIY, the panel and envelope price is fixed — everything you coordinate outside of that is subject to your own trade quotes. Site preparation, foundation engineering, service hookups, and geotechnical work are outside the scope of all three packages and discussed separately before you sign.
For Essentials and DIY, Quantum guarantees the superstructure will be up within 30 days — from permit approval if a permit is required, or from signing if not. The 30-day guarantee applies to the superstructure only. Finishes and interior work are your responsibility in those packages. Complete Turnkey timelines are agreed upon during the sales process.
On Complete Turnkey, yes — Quantum acts as your General Contractor from first conversation to final walkthrough. On Essentials and DIY, you coordinate your own trades. If you want Quantum's process without the full Turnkey price, the PM Package and PM Service add-ons are available.
Both are optional add-ons for Essentials and DIY. The PM Package ($5,000) gives you Quantum's material takeoff, QC checklist, project timeline template, and permit process overview — everything you need to manage your own trades professionally. The PM Service ($15,000) means Quantum finds and manages qualified local trades on your behalf. Essentials price. Turnkey experience.
You get clarity. We review your property, your intended use, your package interest, and the right next step. No obligation. If the fit isn't right, you'll know quickly. If you're already clear on the model and package you want, you can also book a tentative construction date directly — a sales representative will reach out with contract details.
Many Ontario residential properties can now support multiple units as-of-right under current legislation. Suitability still depends on your specific site, servicing, and local conditions. That's exactly what the first call is for — we'll tell you quickly whether it's a realistic fit.
Things go wrong on every build. All four homeowners we interviewed mentioned something that didn't go as planned. All four still recommend Quantum without hesitation. What they said, unprompted: "Things went wrong, but they always had our backs." No nickel-and-diming. No "that's not our problem." We fix it.
This is the most common concern — and the one the building completely disproves. The ERV continuously exchanges fresh outdoor air, recovering heat before it escapes. The result is cleaner air than any vented standard home. "I used to have a really dry nose. I don't anymore." "Everyone who stays here gets a good night's sleep." The mechanism works all the time, automatically.
Included on all packages: PHI-certified panels, Duxton triple-pane windows, ERV, heat pump, in-floor bathroom heat, electric hot water, vinyl flooring, siding, roofing. Excluded from all packages: site preparation, foundation engineering, service hookups, geotechnical work. We walk you through exclusions before you sign — not after. That conversation is part of the first call.
For a pre-designed ADU, a full custom feasibility study isn't required. After your 15-minute call, if you're ready to move forward, a $500 commitment deposit holds your spot. If you proceed to contract, that $500 rolls in. If you don't proceed, you keep the feasibility document. It's designed to filter serious buyers and protect everyone's time.
Sign a pre-construction agreement before May 31, 2026 and $7,000 in Build It Better Credit is applied to your project. On Complete Turnkey it applies toward finish upgrades, appliance upgrades, or your final payment. On Essentials and DIY it applies toward your final payment or upgrades within Quantum's scope.
The Multigenerational Home Renovation Tax Credit gives eligible families up to $7,500 back at tax time. The CMHC insured mortgage refinancing program lets you borrow up to 90% of your post-renovation property value. The County of Simcoe Secondary Suites Program offers up to $50,000 in forgivable loans. The Town of Collingwood Rapid ARU Grant offers $10,000 for qualifying builds. ADUs are also exempt from development charges province-wide under Bill 23. Ask on your call — we'll tell you what applies to your municipality.
Yes — if you're comparing the right numbers. A code-minimum ADU is cheaper to build and more expensive to own. Higher energy bills every year. Tenants who leave in January because heating costs too much. Nobody who owns a Quantum ADU asks whether it was worth it after their first winter.
The Decision

You Now Have Two Choices.

Not a complicated decision. A comparison. Read both paths — then choose.
 BUILD IT BETTER
A pre-designed ADU built with Passive House-certified panels. Enclosed in days. Fixed price. One call handles everything. Built far beyond minimum code for lower energy use, better comfort, quieter interiors, and more stable indoor temperatures through every season. A smarter long-term build for owners who want less compromise now—and fewer problems later.
Sign before May 31: $7,000 Build It Better Credit — applied toward your finishes, appliance upgrades, or final payment. This credit disappears when the date does.
CLOSE THIS PAGE. WAIT
Close this. Go back to your list. Price out a cheaper minimum-code ADU and hope it holds up the way you need it to. Settle for higher energy use, colder surfaces, more temperature swings, and a building that does the minimum because that's all it was designed to do. Another season passes. The $7,000 Build It Better Credit disappears. And you're still deciding between what costs less today and what performs better for years.
